Helping as Christians
How do we see serving and helping others has been in our Christian life. It’s a very significant virtue since the dawn of Christianity. Isn’t it our Lord Jesus Christ himself was the perfect example of being a complete servant or a complete helper of all times? What can you say when He humbly washed His disciples’ feet in the Upper Room or when He gave His life in service to others, how can we expect we’ll do anything less?
You’ve probably heard the words, “love your neighbor as yourself” so many times, from our parents, our schools, churches and everywhere. But it seems by now it’s lost a little significance and influence. Truth is because we now dwell in such an individualistic society that it seems too normal to get caught up in our own thing most of the time without even noticing people around us. While the Bible is clear our rationale should always be the love of Christ, to help and serve our neighbors in need and is also beneficial for our spiritual growth in Christ.
Therefore, we can start practicing to shift our focus to others as well and not solely to ourselves. Because the more we take our eyes off ourselves, the more we’ll see our God around us. I believe there are countless opportunities out there where we can be a blessing to our neighbors. You will notice then that there will be a change in your heart as God will work in us and continue to use us. Remember the passage from Matthew 6: 1-4 (1 “Be careful not to display your righteousness merely to be seen by people. Otherwise you have no reward with your Father in heaven. 2Thus whenever you do charitable giving, do not blow a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in synagogues and on streets so that people will praise them. I tell you the truth, they have their reward! 3But when you do your giving, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4so that your gift may be in secret. And your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you.)
